Latin Lessons

Did you know that the Latin language permeates our society? We have so many sayings (caveat emptor, carpe diem) and language forms that are taken straight from the language! Most people don’t realize that over 60 percent of all English words have Greek or Latin roots, and that about 10 percent of the Latin vocabulary has found its way directly into English. Quite a feat for a language that has been “dead and dusted” since the fall of Rome in 476 A.D.

The fun part about teaching Latin for me is helping students understand that there are so many varieties of Latin words and phrases in the English language – and the similarities become more and more clear as we delve deeper into the language. In other words, Latin lives! Latin phrases and sayings especially abound in the legal and medical professions. With some basic knowledge of Latin, many of these mysterious terms suddenly make perfect sense.

What our students say

Don’t just take our word for it!

“I highly recommend Jako! We have been studying together, on a weekly basis, for 2 1/2 years now! I have enough learning books that I thought I could just keep myself motivated to study on my own, but that didn’t work. It was too easy to always blow it off! Now that I meet with Jako weekly, it motivates me to keep up and I enjoy learning so much more!
And just an aside. The guy is brilliant! Because he speaks so many languages, it helps me to learn, because he can explain the roots of certain words which I might struggle to remember. Then, I go, “AHA! Now I understand!” Please give him a try, either for yourselves or your kids, no matter their ages!”

Jako is encouraging, professional, observant, motivating, and a lot of fun. He will ensure that you love learning your new language — that’s important because language learning is a real commitment.”
